Why should pregnant women take folic acid?

Folic acid is important for the development of nervous system. Folic acid is needed for cell replication and growth. Folic acid helps form building blocks of DNA, the body’s genetic information, and building blocks of RNA, needed for protein synthesis in all cells. Women who plan to get pregnant should take folic acid at least three months before conceiving. This is to ensure that the development of the nervous system in the first eight weeks of pregnancy is normal.
